As I was reading the chapters and the information on the images of women in the media I wanted to find in my own mind images that seem to reflect a more current female model. One specific program that I though of is "My Boys" on TBS. I don't know if any of you watch it but its one of those summer shows that run for a short period of time. I think what I find so interesting about the program is that its about a female sports reporter. And not only that ,her best friends are male.
I find their interactions really interesting because its not what I typically see in male/female interactions. When PJ is with the boys she's just one of them. She plays poker, drinks beer, hangs out at the bar and their conversations are global. The pilot episode was really interesting because PJ started going out with a guy who would become her friend and while they were making out he felt that she was being too aggressive. He commented that she made him feel weak..almost feminine.
Now mind you that there are issues of romance for her, and she does have a female friend. But I feel that this program shows an example of male/female relationships that is rarely seen on TV. Every now and then there are some really interesting attempts at moving away form the culturally accepted norms.

I agree with your posting completely. This show is a very refreshing portrayal of male/female relationships. Another interesting component is the juxtaposition of PJ with her female friend. PJ is untraditional while Stephanie is portrayed as a typical female. One episode was even about how Stephanie couldn’t manage her own money. Even the character names reflect the differences in gender representation.
Hi Zulma
Now a day there are many television programs who present the different types of shows we did not see before, like women who act like tomboys. We latley have more action movies where female actresses preform as heroes and fighters like Xena. We also see more shows about homosexuals such as Will and Grace. I think the media is preparing us to accept the different types of people. Over the years, most TV shows show us men are the mescaline, strong, rough ones and women soft, sexy, and gentle ones.
That is so true, the portrayals of these women and there shopping and lavish lifestyles are so far removed from reality. I cannot wait to see the movie to see what they REALLY are going to portray on the show. I wasnt a HUGE fan of the series but the few shows I did watch were so far off from reality it was a shame.
I love to hear these stories. I want to try and catch this show if it resurfaces on tv. I think that friendships between genders is a topic that isn't addressed enough. The different genders bring their own communication styles which I think can be beneficial to the other in many situations. I know in my own experience that my husband as taught me the male perspective in dealing with work situations for instance. I also think having a friend from of another gender brings a wholeness and uniqueness to your own personality. Has anyone ever been friends or even best friends with a transgendered person? What unique perspectives did you appreciate in this friendship?
